City owned landfill has ideas to open a reuse center

Black Hills, South Dakota USA

Black Hills Area Habitat for Humanity have received a preliminary go-ahead from the city’s Public Works Committee to open a reuse center at the city-owned Rapid City Landfill. The aim is to provide an alternative for disposing of used but still salvageable building materials which would otherwise go to landfill.

“As people are coming to the landfill and might have some type of material that has some life in it, rather than throw it in the pit and bury it, these items will be diverted,” Public Works Director Robert Ellis said. “It’s very innovative and progressive.”

The items deemed reusable will be inspected by Habitat staff and sold at their ReStore, with proceeds going to the Black Hills Area Habitat for humanity.
