Win-Win for kitchen removal program

San Francisco, USA
TRP Kitchen Deconstruction and Removal Program has been launched in San Francisco and will soon go throughout all TRP regions. The scheme is targeting kitchen designers and remodelers and homeowners. For the same cost as traditional smash-and-discard demolition, TRP will remove kitchen cabinets and appliances, leave the project in broom-clean condition and provide a tax-deductible receipt for the donated reusable items.

Keeping warm without costing the earth

Sarah Lonsdale, reporter for the Telegraph, asks if it is possible for an average Victorian terrace to half its energy bills. "I’m in a quiet residential street in Balham, south London. The rows of smart Victorian terraces and semis, with their white stucco work and bay windows are now a desirable design classic. But for a government charged with reducing the nation’s carbon emissions by 80 per cent by 2050, they’re an absolute nightmare. Increasingly, too, for the owners who have to heat these solid-walled, single-paned, airy-lofted, yet rather lovely dinosaurs, they are a growing drain on family finances," said Mrs Lonsdale.

Architect Susan Venner’s has set out to prove she can reduce the environmental impact of her Victorian terrace home. The only visible sign of the project is the cork cladding on the outside end of terrace wall: to be specific, 180mm- deep cork, in two layers fixed with wooden battens up which a few climbing plants have started to move. "This cork cladding has had a massive impact on heating bills, we used it where ever we could. The 130-year-old solid brick walls of these houses let out masses of heat, now 10 times less escapes through this cork," said Mrs Venner.

Other energy-efficient measures that Mrs Venner has introduced include underfloor insulation and newly fitted reclaimed flooring, laid on top of the original wooden floorboards to increase the installation. The reclaimed boards were from a gym at Loughborough University and found on an ad on SalvoWEB!!

"Solar thermal panels on the roof provides hot water for most of the year. Finally, autumn and spring heating is now done with a super-efficient wood-burning stove, licensed for use in smokeless zones, fed with builders’ offcuts and collected wood from Tooting Common. We have very nearly reached the 80% emission reduction we have been striving for." said Mrs Venner

Mystery object

Rich Ellis blogger for Architectural Salvage & Antique Lumber is appealing to anyone who might shed some light on the object above. He has been told it is a ceramic coal heater but is clueless as to if it is American or European and which period it is from.

Incourporate architectural antiques

Julie Silber from Sotheby's says. . .Incourporate architectural antiques in your home to set it apart from the competion

In today’s real estate market, there is an overabundance of inventory. How can you ensure that your property makes a buyer’s short list? Most of the homes that buyers are shown are spec grade. They have so many choices and sellers need to do whatever they can to set their home apart from the comparables.

One way to achieve a memorable showing to a buyer is by incorporating architectural antiques into the design of the property.

Home staging has become an essential tool in our marketplace, but the placement of architectural antiques can truly make a home memorable. Architectural antiques can enhance the exterior of a home that needs a lift, or add layers of charm and sophistication to the interior. An antique front door from a French chateau can literally sell a house. The perfect antique wrought iron chandelier over the dining table can make a buyer fall in love.

SalvoFAIR: RAF Hendon and English Rose

Tom Donaldson of Source in Bath, who will be at this year's Salvo Fair, gives the English Rose kitchen units a final buffing . . .

. . . and Mark does his version of a fly-past in homage to the English Rose kitchen made by CSA Industries who made Spitfires during WWII, the photo by kind permission of RAF Hendon, north London

RAF Hendon, London, UK - THE story of Britain's war effort has many swords into ploughshares tales from wartime industries to peacetime production, but none quite like CSA Industries (CSA: Constant Speed Airscrews), who helped crucially in the production of the Spitfire propeller, and then went on to make luxury aluminium fitted kitchens in the 1950's.

In the 1990's these fabulous kitchens had no secondhand value and were simply thrown away until the late Hazel Matravers of Salvo started matchmaking disposers with possible users, which was written about in BBC Homes & Antiques magazine. A few dealers started rescuing the kitchens and restoring them, the prime mover being Source of Bath who will be putting a restored complete old kitchen on the back of a truck and bringing it to the Salvo Fair at Knebworth. You can buy it there if you are lucky!
