Just wanted to say thanks for a wonderful event.

I attended Salvo on the Saturday with hubby and kids and had a fantastic time, coming home with Sam Coster's 1800 French Roll Top bath (we had no intention of buying a bath, but it was just so beautiful that we couldn't resist !) and lots of lovey old fruit boxes to use as planters.

If you have any photos of the stand that had all the London Underground signs, I would love to see them. Sadly I forgot to take a pic and would love to include it in my own blog.

I'm the owner of the aforementioned butchers shop, and yes, it was in SalvoWEB that I found the salvage yards that had the missing tiles I needed for the restoration. Thanks to everyone at SalvoWEB and all the salvage yard owners who made it possible. I will be opening the shop again for next year's Open House. The figures given by The Times are misleading. The article says 'In the mid 1990s, less than 2 per cent of discarded wood a year was recycled, that figure is now between 40 and 50 per cent.' and that 7m tonnes of wood is discarded.

The truth is that much more than 7m tonnes of wood is discarded from all waste streams in the UK annually of which around 7m tonnes is discarded from construction and demolition alone. In the mid 1990s 10 percent of this C&D wood, or 700,000 tonnes, was reclaimed for reuse as wood by the salvage sector. Officially less than 2 percent was recycled by being chipped, mulched or burnt, although anecdotal evidence is that unrecorded burning was much more prevalent.

In 2009 the amount of reclaimable wood being recycled increased to 50 percent, and 250,000 tonnes are reclaimed for reuse by the salvage sector.

The Times story is greenwash. It is promoting the view that the best option for reusable old demolition timber is burning in waste to energy plants. All reusable wood should be reused. Burning reusable wood is never the best option, and it would only be carbon neutral if the world's forests are expanding by the amount of wood being destroyed and the energy costs of felling and converting the timber were nil. But in reality forests are contracting rapidly and the energy costs of growing new forests and logging and converting new timber are high.

The item is almost certainly Dutch, although there is a possibility that it could be from Belgium or Germany. It is late 19th Century/early 20th Century. They come in a variety of different forms from domestic ovens through to commercial kitchen ranges and chip fryers. Better images showing the detail may help to be more accurate. Dear All, it looks like these defamatory comments come from my ex- business partner pretending to be 'The Lamptons'. I, the new owner of Paris Ceramics, have been working in the surfaces industry for over 10 years. I have never 'ripped' anybody off and have a good name in the industry. Should I be mistaken by the above claim, and that the Lamptons do indeed exist, i would like to discuss their concerns directly with them, furthermore, I would like to do the same with their 'friends' who they claim we have ripped off. Norfolk blacksmith and craftsman David Capes, who was earning a national reputation for his artistic skills, has died in a road accident on the A47 near his home, aged 60.

He was the last of a generation of working blacksmiths in his native Norfolk, who could turn his hand to any task involving metal.

And two years ago, he was a driving force behind an initiative to highlight the creative work of blacksmiths.

The Art on the Edge exhibition at Carleton Forehoe involved 14 exhibitors from across the county last year. As he explained: “We're trying to get different things in the public eye so people can see different ways of looking at art.”

He was a former chairman of the British Artist Blacksmiths' Associa-tion, which has raised the profile of workers in metals over the past 30 years.

Mr Capes, of Frans Green, East Tuddenham, was largely self-taught and worked for traditional black-smith Jack Barber, who ran the forge at Heydon, near Reepham. Under Mr Barber's guidance from 1965, he made and repaired farm implements, hinges and bolts and also became a well-known farrier for about 20 years until back problems led to him developing his artistic flair.

Born at Haveringland, the son of a carpenter, Mr Capes was not a great one for education but he caught the metal-working bug from a teacher, Mr Johnson, head of metalwork at Hellesdon Secondary Modern School.

The teenager, who left school at 15 and stood just 5ft 4ins, even returned to take evening classes, so he could keep practising with the tools.

Almost 20 years ago, he started out on his own. Initially based at a forge behind Morton Hall, near Attlebridge, he repaired gates, railings and other tasks for Lady Prince-Smith's estate. Gradually, he built up a reputation for making items for house and barn conversions, including doorknobs, latches, hooks and hangers.

But he came into his own with artistic metal magic as he created sprouting fungi, curling leaves or restoring the finials of ornate gates at Regent's Park by crafting intricate acanthus leaves. His work can be seen on his doorstep in the village signs at Morton-on-the-Hill and Swannington as well as national group commissions in London and Newcastle.

In his 44 years of working with metal, he left his mark.

He leaves a widow, Sue, and two children, Marcus and Verity, and a granddaughter.

Dave Capes was BABA Chairman from 2004 to 2006.
He was a popular and well liked Chairman who was keen to promote smithing in the UK. While under Dave's Chairmanship he organised several well attended conferences at UK colleges.
Dave was an active BABA member over many years, and regularly held blacksmithing forge-ins at his workshop which attracted many members for a weekend of smithing and merriment.
Dave was a craftsman who loved and understood metal, and gave the material life.
He touched many peoples hearts and will be sadly missed.
